Twitter Local Trends for Philippines Now Included

Now you can, after the social networking site announced on Monday it is including 70 additional locations, including the Philippines, in its Local Trends feature.

Local Trends in the microblogging site features the top 10 topics or keywords being tweeted at any given time, which is determined by the company's Trending Topics algorithm.

In a post in the official Twitter blog, the company said that with the addition of the 70 locations, there are now more than 100 countries and metropolitan locations with their own trends list.

"You can browse these new locations by clicking 'change' in the Trends sidebar on twitter.com," the post said.

Users still have the option to see worldwide Trends, the company added.

The Local Trends system was first introduced in early 2010, and first featured major US metropolitan areas and select countries in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Among the new cities and countries added to the feature are Santiago, Chile; Jakarta, Indonesia; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; South Africa; and Japan.

According to Twitter's help pages, "Twitter's Trending Topics algorithm identifies topics that are immediately popular, rather than topics that have been popular for a while or on a daily basis, to help people discover the "most breaking" news stories from across the world."

"We think that trending topics which capture the hottest emerging trends and topics of discussion on Twitter are the most interesting," it added.
